Guidance for the Use of Synthetic Environments to Support Human Factors Integration

Abstract

This document provides guidance for the use of Synthetic Environments (SEs), to support human factors (HF) activities carried out as part of the HFI process. A review of existing available documentation was carried out. The guidance contained in this document is based on the review supplemented with real life experiences using SE to do HF activities as part of the HFI process. The next step is to hold a workshop with stakeholders and other HFI providers with experience of using SE to support their HFI and HF activities, in order to review and rationalise the guidance contained in this document. Guidance is categorised on four levels (Category 1 to 4) corresponding to four levels of HF criticality (Impact Levels 1 to 4). HF criticality is defined in terms of the potential impact of a catastrophic, extensive, serious or minor event occurring.
