HFI and Emerging Technologies

Abstract

The purpose of the Human Factors Integration Defence Technology Centre (HFI DTC) work package 3.2 is to identify emerging trends to be included in the Human Factors Integration (HFI) process. This document is the technical report, which is a deliverable for the Defence Technology Centre work package 3.2.2, to review within the context of 3.2, developments in emerging complex systems and emergent technologies.

For Human Factors (HF) to be integrated effectively it has to be considered at the earliest possible opportunity in the design / procurement process. This document describes a tool for classifying the likely HF issues associated with a nascent technology. The tool is designed for use by designers and those involved in procurements in the earliest stages of a project and aims to flag HF issues at the earliest stages of a concept’s development. It can be applied to existing as well as emerging/nascent technologies and can be used repeatedly throughout the design stages as the design concept and details of the technology are refined.
