Dr Neil Cooke
Dr. Neil Cooke is a lecturer in Applied Computing at the University of Birmingham, a post he has held since 2005.
He has recently (2009) developed a postgraduate course Interactive 3D design for Virtual Environments and Serious
Games which teaches student’s 3D modeling, AI programming and usability evaluation techniques. His current research
interests include the study of multimodal interaction (speech, gesture and gaze) and the underlying modalities’
recognition and synthesis technologies. He has also taught and developed courses in artificial intelligence, project
management, software design and medical informatics. His PhD, awarded in 2007, involved developing robust signal processing
techniques for eye tracking data, and using the information from a person’s visual attention to improve Automatic Speech
Recognition performance. Prior to academia he gained 10 years experience working in the telecommunications sector in
communications network and software engineering designer roles.
